Child marriage Consultation AJK, 18th January 2024, Pearl Continental Hotel- Muzaffarabad

National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) with its development partners i.e., UNFPA, UNICEF and UN Women held a consultation with provincial stakeholders today in Muzaffarabad AJK. The important stakeholders included State Commission on the Status of Women, Social Welfare Department, Women Development Department, Civil Society Organizations, Health and Education Department , law enforcement agencies and media. The consultation was largely attended by government and civil society organizations.

In her opening remarks, Chairperson NCSW Ms. Nilofar Bakhtiar said that NCSW realizes the gravity of the issue of Child marriage that deprives our girls of their fundamental rights like health and education. Considering the drastic impact of child marriage, the National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) has constantly been struggling to review the legislation regarding child marriage .The Chairperson Condemned the violence against Kashmiris on the other side of LOC in Indian occupied Kashmir and expressed solidarity with the Kashmiri women and children. The Chairperson stressed the need to unite inorder to end child marriage: "Every child deserves a childhood filled with books, toys and dreams".

The Guest of honor Minister for AJK, Professor Taqdees Gillani, emphasized the commitment of state institutions to provide girls with information and resources for informed decision-making. Despite a high literacy rate and female access to education, she noted a lack of expertise in the law department, urging concerted efforts to address this for the promulgation of pro women legislations. Minister Gillani praised the role of NCSW and vowed to combat child marriage.

Mr. Zafar Malik, Minister for Higher Education in AJK as Chief Guest appreciated NCSW's campaign against child marriage and highlighted the importance of education as the key to addressing social issues. He stressed state-level efforts for girls' education and condemned the social norms depriving women of their basic rights. He expressed solidarity with Kashmiri and Palestinian women.

Opposition leader Khawaja Farooq emphasized on providing more opportunities for girls in higher education to curb underage marriages and assured the house of his full support to the noble cause of child marriage restraint bill. After the innaugral session group discussions were held and finally all groups came up with recommendations to lobby and take this agenda forward.
