Cycling Sunday for #16DaysOfActivism
Cycling Sunday, 5th December 2021
Cycling Sunday is a monthly event that takes place in Islamabad on the first Sunday of each month. On December 5, 2021, the National Commission on the Status of Women organised a walking, running, and cycling event in collaboration with Bardasht, Urban Innovation, ICT Administration, Islamabad Cycling Association, Islamabad Traffic Police, Tiger's Force, Graana, and the European Union to commemorate 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence.
From 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the event took place on Jinnah Avenue between Beverly Centre and D-Chowk. The participants wore orange shirts, caps, and scarves to send a message that gender-based violence will not be tolerated. Ms. Nilofar Bakhtiar, Chairperson of NCSW, addressed the audience and asked everyone to take responsibility for stopping the epidemic of violence against women.
Wecamp participants were served by home-based women entrepreneurs who set up art and food stalls. This was an ideal combination of activities to convey three crucial messages:
- No to VAW
- Economic empowerment
- Clean and green Islamabad
Cycling Sunday is part of a bigger campaign to encourage more cycling in Islamabad and to show that cycling isn't simply a sport, but also a recreational activity with practical applications. When it comes to mobility and recreation, Urban Innovation is dedicated to collaborative efforts that promote decreased automotive dependence, safer roads and streets, and greater freedom of choice.
